So Far, So Good?
So, the site is up, we’re posting, we’re guest posting, we’re interviewing Stumblers, and we’re taking your comments. I suppose that means that we are officially in business and that the original rush of construction is over. We have dusted everything, such as it is, and sanded some of the rough edges. All that having been said, we have a long way to go. To that end, we have some questions. Please give us your answers in comments. Keep it clean, people.
How does the site look?
(I should note here, just to avoid confusion, that I redesigned the banner and changed the color scheme late in the evening of 02-29, based on comments to this post. I also increased the size of the comments text. This may help to make the comments more understandable when you get to them.)
I know, that’s just cosmetic stuff, but it is still important. I saw a comment somewhere on SU that we had the ugliest banner header ever. That may be going a bit far. ;o) Or not. It is supposed to be clean, simple, and recognizable. In a room holding 534 people, you could probably get at least 537 opinions on the design of anything. But there are some important usability issues:
Can you read everything?
Is all the text clear and on a properly contrasted background?
Can you tell where the hyperlinks are?
Can you find all of the navigation controls?
Can you find the RSS feed?
Is there anything else screwed up or missing?
How’s the subject matter?
A very few people have made it clear that they don’t feel that we should be in existence at all, and that we are a waste of space in their pure SU world. My advice to those people is to not come here. If it hurts to do that, people, don’t do that. For that vast majority of you that are not offended by our temerity in building such a site, we want to give you what you want, which brings up the following questions:
What sorts of things would you like to see discussed?
Are we missing any important Stumbler Interview questions?
Would you rather have how-to’s or why-do-we articles?
Do you want comparisons between SU and other social media sites?
Would you like to see polls / voting on the site?
Please give us some feedback. We have had a lot of positive feedback, but most of it has been pretty general in nature. While we appreciate that, the only way that we can make the site better is by figuring out what the readers (that’s you, by the way) want. Do you have something on your mind about StumbleUpon that nobody has covered yet? As you have seen (great post, Webdoodle), we’re open to guest posts and would be happy to work with you on yours.
The thing is, we’re here to stay. As long as we’re going to be here, we might as well be making you happy. So talk to us. Tell us what you want. That’s what the comment section is for. ![]()

I really think you should invest some time in redesigning this layout. The 3 column layout was great about 2 years ago. Don’t put Google ads on both sides, it just looks tacky.
I think a great blog should catch your attention at first glance, this doesn’t do it for me. These are just my constructive criticism and I hope you don’t take it the wrong way.

I think the site design looks good so far - clean, basic and simple.
I’m sure as with any other fledgling site, this space will naturally find its niche and voice.
As a not very technical guy I’ve particularly enjoyed some how-to’s on other SU blogs about how to add certain features to your profile (videos, etc…) using small amounts of basic code. I’ve also enjoyed articles on soc media etiquette (how to friend, not to friend responsibly, etc…) But that is just one little mans opinion. The posts so far have been great, I look forward to reading more!

Nope, I want to hear what you have to say. That’s why I asked. Give me the URLs of a couple of sites that you really like the look of. That goes for any of the rest of y’all that don’t like the looks, too.
Thanks for taking the time to let me know, and please point me at sites you like. I’m game for anything.

That’s exactly why I asked! Based on your recommendation, we will now be doing a series of posts on how to get custom things done on StumbleUpon, and on the ins and outs of social media. Far from being “one little man”, you are one of my favorite people on SU!

I think even basic stuff, like how to add images, videos into your SU blog, tips and tools would be great and very appealing to those newer to SU.
Thanks for the resource!

Keep it up guys. Agreed that posts about SU etiquette are a good addition. Some sort of analysis into why certain stumbles “work” and others don’t might be interesting.
Kind of agree with the first poster on the design too though. My main concern is the quality of the graphics though, which look kind of cheap … I won’t let that keep me away from reading the content though!

Ah, another vote for SU how-to’s. As a bona fide geek, I can verify that geeks figure everybody just knows how to do that stuff, for which we (or maybe just me) should be shot. We’ll be doing how-to’s. Thanks a million for stopping by and giving us your thoughts!

Thanks for the kind words.
And thanks for the idea about an analysis of why some posts fly high and some don’t. That’s quite a topic and we’d be thrilled to tackle it.
Graphics? What graphics?
Maybe that’s a problem. I went for simple and may have succeeded too well. You folks have me re-pondering design issues…

the banner is clean and noticeable but the colors are a bit loud, you can capture my attention with softer colors. The layout is alright but I think the ad’s on both sides are tacky as well. I like the idea of your blog and I look forward to valuable information in the future.

new to SU i love it i’m fairly new to computers in general and i’m running on an old imac g4 osx 10.2.8 and am finding it very difficult to add pics to my blog, so an how to section for all us newbies would be a great addition

Okay, I can see that. I wonder if anyone likes the kind of designs I usually do any better, like maybe this one. I usually do a lot softer stuff, as you can see. Would that be better?
As for ads, I’m probably going to do ads. I need to pay server fees and stuff somehow. I would listen to suggestions as to how to do them better, though. Maybe I should be asking the following question: “What sort of ads (and where) would you hate least?” This blog is very new, and nobody is going to pay for advertising tiles just now, so I’m sort of stuck with Google.

Okay, I’ll put that one among the very first. It’s easier than you think.

Other than the first paragraph, the type is very faint against the white background. Especially with the rather fluorescent colors in the header. I’d like to see a bolder font (and a larger font for comments) and a slightly shaded background. For contrasting the first ‘attention-getting’ paragraph, maybe you could make it a size or two larger font. I agree that the 3-column look doesn’t work well. I’m confused about the clocks in the header … they don’t represent the current time, so what are they for?
February 29th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Glynes -
That’s the kind of detail I really need. I don’t have any trouble reading the blog on any of the equipment I’ve got, but that is never representative enough. I am just bolding the first paragraph, and doing nothing to the rest. I have already changed the theme CSS to stop forcing the comments into all upper case. I can also make font used fpr comments bigger. As for something to go by, can you give me a site or two that you really like the looks of, so I can visually see what you like.
Well, the clocks are just me trying to be clever and failing. I was trying to make a visual comment on the subtitle for the blog, All StumbleUpon, All The Time using the two clocks and the SU logo. I guess thats a solid FAIL, huh?

The site looks great, but the only grievance that I have is that the top banner could be changed a bit. Maybe make the text 3d or livened up a bit. It looks flat. Other than that, it looks fine to me! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for taking the time to give us some comments! Yeah, I was going for simple with the banner and it wound up being too, well, simple and maybe a little loud. I’m rethinking it as we type.
I have already made the comment text larger by 2 points (10 to 12) which should help with comment legibility.
I’m going to keep the ads, I guess. I wonder if you all think they would look better if they were all in one sidebar, instead of in both?
Maybe if we do well, I can get rid of these and sell some of those nifty 125 x 125 tile ads…

Looking good!
I prefer black text as opposed to gray, for easier reading when scanning.
Sounds like you have a stumble savvy crowd here… but an occasional post for SU beginners would be helpful to those of us just testing the waters and learning the basics.
All the best with the site… a great idea and topic.

Hi! Thanks for dropping in! I will take that black-rather-than-gray suggestion under advisement. It is, of course, better contrast. Some monitors tend to overdrive the black naturally, or when set to too high a contrast level, as people often do. Maybe I’ll work up to black via a much darker gray…
I also agree about the posts for beginners, and for all levels of Stumblers, really. We want everyone to fell welcome and included.
It was great of you to take time to make these suggestions. I know you are one busy blogger!

All right, ladies and gentlemen, I have replaced the old garish theme with a new less-garish theme. I hope that this is easier on the eyes, yet more eye-catching, and equally simple. Let me know if you like it any better.
Let it never be said that we are not responsive to our client base.

I stumbled upon you at SU and what a great accident. You see, even if I’ve been registered a wile, I haven’t yet get the real hang of it. This blog really seams to sort a lot out.
So to your question:
The first part:
Yes to all of them and at the end: I miss your Communities (like see the answer below).
The second part.
I would like to see best practise on SU and how to, How can it be used to attract readers to your blog and how to find interesting stuff on others blog.
I would love to read about and other social media sites like FaceBook (have installed the api), BlogCatalog and digg and how it can combined with SU (like FaceBook).
Keep up the good work and I’ll be back - wishing you a great weekend too and hello all the way from Norway

Yes, I like the “this one” example much better!
I would put all the ads to one side, I think it would be least annoying that way

Hmmmm. Okay. Actually, I like that one, too. I’ll be moving the ads, once I figure out themes. I’m going to go looking in a few moments for a theme with two right sidebars that I could move the current header and graphics into. Then I could have the content at the left, the navigation in the sidebar just to the right of the contant, and any ads in the sidebar ro the far right.
Least annoying is good.

If you’re looking into themes, check out Cutline . I’m a big fan. We use a 3-column version (with two right hand sidebars) on our MVFC Blog.
March 1st, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Peter -
Cutline is all right, but as far as I can tell the newest version is just a single sidebar. I seem to spend my life in unsupported themes, and I don’t see any indication that they are going to support the 1.x three-column themes or make new 2.x three-column themes. Thanks for the advice, but I’ll probably pass.
